| Abstract(in English) | A mobile satellite communications service was introduced originally in the field of global maritime communications, and then it was deployed as land mobile communications to be mainly utilized in the sparsely populated areas. Land mobile services using geo-stationary satellites have not prevailed enough because of high system cost and considerable terminal size. To overcome such deficiencies, new systems using low earth orbit(LEO)satellites which provide mainly voice services globally with hand-held terminals were proposed and their service-launch is near at hand. In addition, to cope with the rapid growth of Internet service, global network connection services using LEO satellites have been deveioped. In Japan, a feasibility study on a next-generation LEO system which would provide a global multimedia mobile satellite service was conducted in 1996, and the development of key technologies needed to construct this next-generation LEO system started this year. |
