Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Conventional features are robust for recognizing either deformed or degraded characters. This paper proposes a feature extraction method for the recognition of characters corrupted by noise. A new technique, run-length compensation, is introduced for approximately extracting stroke directional information from degraded characters. It is applied to the conventional feature vector based on directional run-lengths. Experiments for synthetic degraded characters show that the proposed feature is superior to conventional ones over a wide range of noise.
