Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We investigated the perception of facial expressions of the inverted faces. It is known that the inverted faces are hard to recognize("inversion effect"). We used the biological motion like stimuli. The point lights representing faces were attached to endpoints and midpoints of eyebrows, eyes, and lips in 18points condition or only endpoints in 10points condition. We used the photographs of four emotional(angry, happy, sad, surprised)and the neutral faces as the original images to make the stimuli. We presented the neutral face and one emotional face sequentially. We manipurated the orientation, the order of two stimuli, and the Inter-Stimulus-Interval(ISI). Each face was presented for 80msec. The subjects judged the facial expression of the stimuli by 4 Alternative-Forced-Choice procedure. The "inversion effect" is observed only when the neutral face is presented first and no ISI(apparent motion was percerved). This result indicates that the perception of the dynamic facial expressions is more dependent on the configural processing than the static. The difference of the dependence on the configural processing between the static and the dynamic information suggests that these two information may be processed by the different mechanisms in the perception of facial expressions.
