Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper proposes a novel technique for target object tracking/extraction in an image sequence. The current state-of-the-art approach is a frame-by-frame processing, where the contour in a current frame is obtained based on one in the previous frame. By arranging each frame along with the temporal axis in a spatio-temporal 3D space, a target object in motion appears as a tube in this space and the surface of the tube corresponds to the target contours. This technique splits the 3D space into the background and object regions by applying 3D watershed algorithm which is an extended version of the conventional 2D one, and obtains precise contours for the object. Several experimental results given in this paper demonstrate that the technique can successfully keep tracking for an object with a certain measure of motion.
