Abstract(in English) | In relation with groupware utilizing virtual environments, the compatibility issues are investigated between an event in the virtual space formed on computer-networks and its counterpart in the real physical space where our body works. A model named Room Computer that is a composition of a computer and a room which has the capability of observing group members is proposed. The functions and usability of the room computer are discussed. The necessary techniques to build such a room computer are investigated. For it, the available techniques such as person identification by face recognition, human position detection, situation estimation, and data exchange media between human and machine specifically gesture recognition are discussed. Furthermore, the design and functions of virtual laboratory VILLA, which is used to support users to start meeting or conversation over telephone, being developed by the present authors, are investigated based on the room computer model. VILLA is recognized as an attempt to build a room computer connected to networks, and it turned out that the development of a scheme to automatically detect the position and to estimate person's situations is most urgent task of the project. |
