Evaluation of image processing filter by histogram with connectivity of pixel values

Abstract(in English) The median filter family removes impulsive noises effectively, however, it tends to eliminate small variations of pixel values contained in the original image. This paper proposes a method to evaluate the degree of this elimination of variations. The area where pixels of the same value are gathering is called "cluster" in this paper. The term "connectivity" is defined as the number of pixels contained in a cluster. The "histogram with connectivity", which assigns the number of pixels to each pair of pixel value and connectivity, is proposed in this paper, and the differences of the degree of cluster generation are illustrated. The value to describe the variation of the distribution of the histogram along the axis of connectivity is also defined, and the degree of elimination of the variation of pixel values are evaluated for a sample image in the case of the median and the average filters.
