Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recent studies have reported that the gaze direction of other person produces reflexive orienting of an observer's visual attention. This study examined the effect of other person's gaze on the illusory line motion. Seven naive subjects were presented with a simple line drawing of a human face looking left or right. With variable cue lead time, a probe line then appeared horizontally above the face. Subjects were asked to indicate the side from which the probe line appeared to be drawn. In this experiment, we found that one group of subjects reported motion away from the gaze direction and another group reported motion towards the gaze directon, and that the frequency of subjects' judgements appeared to change depending on cue lead time. These results suggest that the other person's gaze has some effects on the perceptual processes of the illusory line motion.
