Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The threshold for correct identification of temporal order was investigated using the psychophysical method of constant stimuli.Participants were presented with pairs of vibrotactile stimuli delivered to different hands, and made a forced-choice response(left hand-first vs.right hand-first vs.simultaneous)indicating temporal order of stimuli. The results showed that(1)the onset of the first stimulus of a pair of stimuli had to occur approximately 40-50 ms before the second stimulus in order for the two to be perceived as successive;(2)the threshold stimulus onset asynchronies(SOAs)were shorter when the left hand stimulation preceded the right hand one compared to the opposite order of presentation;(3)this left-first advantage was not replicated by a different psychophysical method(PEST)or a manipulation of hernispace with crossed-arms condition. The findings suggest that leftward advantage for the judgment of temporal order is not the result of a right hemisphere specialization for tactile temporal discrimination but that of a hemispatial attentional bias.
