Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Our single neuronal receptive field studies in awake monkeys have established that areas 1, 2 and 5 in the postcentral gyrus are associative while area 3 is a primary sensory receiving area. Our recent studies revealed that in areas 2 and 5, the integration of neural signals of different submodalities, those from different regions of the forelimb, from the forelimb and trunk, from both sides of the body, and finally the integration of visual and somatosensory signals. Implication of these observations in tactile perception and awareness of self is discussed.
