Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The current study investigated the influence of depression on individuals' recollection of pleasant and unpleasant events from childhood. 40 university students took part in two experiments. In initial experiment, the subjects were asked to write down as many personal events as they could recall in 30 minutes that took place from birth to their senior year in high school. Afterwards, subjects rated each event for unique or general and for pleasantness or unpleasantness, and completed a questionnaire about their individual tendencies toward depression. ln a follow-up experiment one month later, subjects were asked to recall as many of the events that they had described in the first experiment as possible. The speed with which they recalled individual events was recorded. The results indicated that subjects with a high tendency for depression were slower to recall events judged unique and unpleasant than any other events. This suggests that depression tendency may influence one's ability to remember unpleasant personal events.
