Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this paper we first show a neural network model which only assumes the basic physiological mechanism: the lateral inhibition between different colors in visual pathway. This model, which turns out somewhat intricate, explains the interaction between colors as "complementary-color inhibition"in opponent color space, or a color is subjected to attraction or repulsion of the complementaries of other colors. Thus we are able to realize successfully the simultaneous contrast and assimilation illusions using this neural network. Furthermore, we propose a quantitative characterization of color appearance in polychromatic perception based on the above neural network.
