Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The purpose of the experiment is to unravel the respective role of color and shape information in a face detection task in real world photograph. The major advantage of color information over luminance profile is that it is not dependent on the face orientation. However, a face detection mechanism should depend on the skin pigmentation itself and the color composition of the background. To test these hypothesis, color histograms of different faces and color histograms of several scenes categories are computed in the L^*u^*v^* color space. Distances between these color data distributions are compared with subjects' RT and accuracy in a face detection task. Results emphasize that color is a primary cue for face extraction in complex images.
