Recognition of Hand Shapes with Neural Networks

Abstract(in English) We are making a computerized Japanese Sign Language Dictionary System for translating, making telecommunications with the deaf, and learning itself. We consider the sing to be one of its input methods. The sign is a language of movement and space of hands and of finger. It is time series. We have proposed a method which applies image analyses to global recognition and surface electromyogaphic analyses to the local recognition of hand shapes. This article presents an approach to using an artificial neural network for the latter. Computer simulations using the time delay neural networks were carried out. The recognition rate was 93.7%. This approach is very useful for the recognition of hand shapes, because in addition to approach, we also use image analyses for the global recognition of the sign language.
