Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently interdisciplinary and collaborative researches about faces are actively done. From a viewpoint of communication, mental health and cosmetics we developed a smile training system. This system facilitates smile training by face synthesis based on a muscle model of facial expressions. A improved modelling of sphincher muslces by half ellipses enables natural smiling face synthesis from a user's original face image. Face synthesis function helps a smile training by presenting an exmaple of good smiles, and furthermore users use this function to find their favorite smiles by trial and errors. An elementary experiment was conducted using five subjects. They were instructed to synthesize "good smiles" by changing muscle parameters and required subjective assessment for the synthesized faces. We found that there is close relationship between "good smiles" and specific muscles of facial expressions, and that subjects tend to give higher ratings to the "good smiles" synthesized by others than those by themselves.
