Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Stimulation in the form of spreading on the retina does not always lead to a clear percept, but produces ambiguous perceptual impressions, "looming" at one time and "expansion" at other time. We examined the factors determining "looming" or "expansion" impression by changing the "spreading" speed and the luminance in the disk-shaped dot pattern. The results showed that as the speed of spreading increased, "looming" was dominant over "expansion" that was observed when spreading was slow. Luminance change affected systematically perceptual impressions under the condition where the spreading speed was constant. These findings contradict with the interpretation that spreading stimuli produce a steady impression of "looming".
