Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This report addresses on the use of e-mail over the Internet for transmitting messages in signed language. Although many people use e-mail, they usually use messages in written language. Therefore, deaf people who use signed language in daily life are required to use written Japanese for e-mail. In this report we first show e-mail systems called picture-mail system for signed language communication, and further investigate their variations from the viewpoints of the representative medium of messages, message form to be transmitted, transmission form with/without a relay service, and the language medium of a user. Certain structures are shown and discussed their technological and human issues based on preliminary experiments with deaf people. Certain applications of picture-mail systems are also discussed.
