Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The aim of this atudy was to examine the brain regions involved in recognition of gender and emotion expressed ambiguously by faces with functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI). Eight normal subjects participated. For the emotion task, subjects made a decision as to the each of 16 facial expressions. The stimuli used for emotion task were faces with ambiguous emotions(EA), and with clear emotion(EC). For gender task faces with ambiguous gender(GA)and clear gender(GC)were used. EA compared with EC elicited activation of the anterior cingulate gyrus, right inferior frontal gyrus, and left inferior frontal gyrud. The activation in the anterior cingulate gyrus, right inferior frontal during GA compared with GC. These results indicate that the processing of ambiguity for facial expression is different from the processing for gender.
