Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Previous neuropsychological studies have reported that the bilateral amygdala damage impair the recognitions of the facial expressions of fear. However, this was not conclusive because of a paucity of empirical data and the presence of contradictory findings. To address this problem, we carried out the experiment of facial expression recognition with a Japanese bilateral amygdala damage patient. We compared the target subject with normal controls(n=15)and brain damaged controls(n=9). Subjects matched the emotion of facial expressions with the appropriate verbal labels. The amygdala damage patient performed worse in recognizing the fear relative to normal controls and its error pattem was different from those of both control groups. This patient also showed specific error pattern on the anger recognition. These findings suggest that the amygdala damage universally impair the processing of facial expressions of negative emotions, particularly fear.
