Abstract(in English) | We discussed perceptual aspects of the difficulties experienced by new Braille readers. Half of twelve sighted observers learned Braille in one of two learning conditions (i.e., tactile and visual). In the test, they identified Braille patterns presented tactually with surrounding maskers. In both learning conditions, the masking effects were the largest when the maskers were sparse dots, which gave the most similar configuration to ordinary Braille sentences. However, the effects were attenuated only in the tactile learning group when the observers were instructed the type of maskers in advance. The results demonstrate that the masking effects of sparse dots are responsible at least partially for the difficulties experienced by new Braille readers but the effects will decrease when tactile information is appropriately used. |
