Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) To investigate the complex facial information conveyed by temporal cortical neurous, we isolated 1793 single units in the superior temporal sulcus and in the inferior temporal gyrus of two awake macaque monkeys while performing a fixation task. The stimuli were monkey and human faces with expressions and simple shapes. About 10% (180) of the neurons responded to these stimuli, and 86 of them were tested quantitatively. We performed time-resolved calculations of the information transmitted by these cells and found that the initial transient firing correlated well with rough categorization (e.g. faces vs. nonface stimuli), and the subsequent sustained firing represented finer information (e.g. expression of monkey faces).
