Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) On the process of facial categorization, we hypothesized two models. One is that a facial stimulus is categorized by the distance from the most typical facial expression (prototype), the other is that defined by the distance from the general or abstract concept itself. We used the computer-synthesized compound faces as stimulus. In Experiment 1, subjects were required to rate these stimulus and 6 emotional concept (happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, disgust, fear) by semantic differential technique. It proved that the both of them are recognized in the same dimension with two axis, pleasant-unpleasant and activity. In Experiment 2, we presented subjects to judge what category these facial simuli belong to. The result indicates that the protorype model is better than the concept model to explain subjects' performance
