Efficiency Improvement of a Synchronous Rectifier for the ZVS-PWM Controlled Series Resonant Converter

Abstract(in English) Many kinds of switching converters are used for the power supply of the telecommunication equipment. The efficiency improvement and the noise reduction are required from the view point of the environmental regulation. We have already presented the ZVS-PWM controlled series resonant converter with an active-clamp citcuit. However, its efficiency characteristics are not suitable when the input voltage changes. In this paper, the efficiency drop for the input voltage variation is examined by dividing the synchronous, rectifier operation into several states. As a result, it is clarified that the cause of the efficiency drop is a resonance oscillation associated with the leakage inductance in the secondary winding of transformer and the input capacitances of rectifying MOS FETs. Furthermore, in order to remove the effect of the leakage inductances, a ZVS-PWM Controlled Series Resonant Converter with Current-Doubler-type Synchronous rectifier is proposed. Then efficiency improvement and the low-noise characteristic of this proposed converter is confirmed experimentally.
