Tumor region extraction keeping boundary shape information and its application to benigh/malignant discrimination of tumors

Abstract(in English) This paper presents a method to exactly extract tumor regions for discrimination between benign tumor and malignant tumor from chest X-ray CT images used for a close medical examination. For benign/malignant discrimination using CAD(Computer-Aided Diagnosis) system, tumor regions which have exact edge information is required to define regions for calculation of features and quantification of edge information itself. We applied the method to seventy-eight practical chest X-ray CT images. It was shown that tumor regions in sixty-seven CT images were extracted with detailed shapes of boundary. Furthermore, we tested this method bt applying it to sixty-seven CT images which were extracted tumor regions well. It was confirmed that the performance of discrimination was improved by using the tumor regions extracted by the proposed method.
