Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper describes a method for measuring the cross sectional area of the pipe-structured organ in the Virtualized Endoscope System. In previous methods, the cross sectional area is calculated by using thinned results of target organs. However, this method can not always compute the cross sectional area correctly due to the property of the thinning method such as the occurrence of spurious bronchus and degeneration. Here we estimate the optimal cross sections including a measuring point, by finding the plane that minimizes the cross sectional area with changing the normal of the plane. The method also automatically performs this measuring process for each bronchial branch by using tree structures of the organ extracted from original images. We implemented this method on a virtualized endoscopy system and evaluated the performance. Experimental results showed that our method could calculate the cross sectional area stably.
