Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Segmentation of pelvis and femur from three-dimensional(3D) computed tomography(CT) images is necessary for the purpose of computer assisted surgical planning and intraoperative navigation of the hip joint. However, clinical complications such as osteoarthritis and congenital deformities, technical limitations in CT imaging such as inherent blurring and partial volume effect, as well as narrow inter-bone regions and presence of blood in the bone tissues result in bone images with textured regions and weak and diffused boundaries. For these reasons, developing feasible techniques for automatic, accurate and robust segmentation and separation of pelvis and femur, that are close spatially in the hip joint, from CT images, is a serious task. In this research, we propose a solution to segment and separate pelvis and femur from 3D CT images. Our approach consists of the following three steps:(a)resampling 3D CT images by a sinc interpolation and enhancing the resultant data set by extracting the principal component of a 3D Hessian matrix;(b)detecting non-overlapping boundaries of pelvis and femur, by optimal thresholding, morphological operations, and fitting a sphere to the common boundary of pelvis and femur;(c)refining the rough boundary obtained in step(b)by employing snakes and moving disk techniques. The proposed techniques were applied to the 3D CT images of 25 subjects. The corresponding algorithms are implemented in the MEDAL software and available in the Internet. |
