Detection of Vehicles from On-board Camera Sequences Using Prediction for a Road Area : Magnification of a Predictable Area Using a 3D Lane Model

Abstract(in English) Road environment recognition is needed for a driver assistance system which is one of promising applications in the field of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems). We previously proposed a detection method of preceding vehicles out of on-board camera sequences. In the method, an image of a road area in the current frame is predicted from the previous one using a road plane model, and the regions where prediction errors become large are detected as the vehicles. However, it is difficult to detect a vehicle in the edge of a road, because the upper part of such a vehicle is not projected onto a predictable area. To cope with the problem, we employ a new 3D lane model which can represent 3D structure of guardrails, soundproof walls, and so on, for the purpose of magnifying the predictable area. Simulation results indicate that the model can correctly detect the vehicles in the edge of a road.
