Efficiency of Dynamic Resolution Conversion Scheme in Low-delay MPEG-4 Communication System

Abstract(in English) In delay sensitive audiovisual applications such as sports relay or remote monitoring, it is required to suppress the end to end delay as small as possible. Especially, when video compression coding is associated, buffering of coded bitstream is the dominant element in low-bitrate communication of about hundred kbps. The buffering delay can be reduced by minimizing the size of bitstream buffer, however, it may introduce severe degradations in decoded images or collape of buffer in the worst case. In this paper, we propose a new scheme using Dynamic Resolution Conversion scheme included in the MPEG-4 ARTS profile and realizes a low delay audiovisual communication with improved image quality. In computer simulation experiments, we compare proposed scheme using ARTS profile to conventional scheme using simple profile in the view of subjective audiovisual quality, and objective statistics. Our conclusion indicates the effectiveness of proposed Dynamic Resolution Conversion scheme in low-delay MPEG-4 Communication System.
