Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Our purpose is to prevent the rear-end collision of the vehicle, and propose a novel technique for a front-vehicle observation system using sequence of road images. In this research, we have developed the in-vehicle system that can be applied to real-time operation in a software-base using the algorithm with low calculation cost. In our method, we calculate projection conversion (a road surface is changed into the image seen from right above) of the vehicle's front image from the vehicle's front images taken by the single camera placed on the dashboard of our vehicle. Next, the difference of two projection conversion images calculated. Finally, we calculate degree of crushing risks depending on distance to front vehicle and running velocity of our vehicle, and give the warning to a driver. This system mounted on a vehicle has been tested in actual on expressway. As a result, the effectiveness of our method is verified.
