A study on a method for wave-overtopping detection by visual surveillance

Abstract(in English) The early detection of wave-overtopping, where a high wave attacks coastal roads, is an important issue in automatic surveillance of roads.The features of visual surveillance of roads include that some cameras are movable, that the influence of vibration and noise is strong, and that the brightness and the color is unstable due to the outdoor setting, so that the conventional background difference methods do not give satisfactory performance.This paper proposes a method for wave-overtopping detection that is applicable under such circumstances.This method, in order to reduce the influence of vibration and noise, smoothes along the time axis the motion vectors that are obtained by motion estimation.After that, referring to the straightness of the distribution of motion vectors, it performs an automatic identification of road regions and detection of abnormal motion vectors.Furthermore, the combined processing with a background difference method suppresses false detection of the events other than wave-overtopping and heavy seas.
