Abstract(in English) The accelerating need to serve the IP network with optical fiber infrastructure in order to support higher speed and higher bandwidth communication services has led to a rapid build-up of optical cable networks.Accompanying this rapid network build-up is an indispensable need to ensure that the optical cables have been properly installed and that network operation is reliably maintained through the early detection of faults. Such tasks can be effectively accomplished by an optical fiber monitoring system using an optical time domain reflectometer(OTDR)and incorporating a mapping function to pinpoint fault location on a map. This paper describes the system make-up of such an optical fiber monitoring system, the various component units and modules, functions and features of the component optical test unit and fiber selector, as well as the mapping function and software used in the central management console.
