Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A simple test method for breaking an optical fiber in a liquid is proposed using a vertical tensile tester. Silica glass optical fiber with cladding diameter of 125 μm was used and optical fiber under test was scored with a round-shaped blade. Tensile test of the optical fiber with a fracture origin was carried out in water or ethyl alcohol. Tensile speed was set to be 0.1, 0.5 or 1.0 mm/minute respectively. It was found that there was 10% tensile strength decrease in water and 12% increase in ethyl alcohol in comparison with that in air. It was also clarified that tensile strength probability distributions of optical fiber with an artificial fracture origin were Weibull distributions, as those of optical fibers with no artificial fracture origins were.
