Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The optical fiber frequency shifter is indispensable device for a heterodyne interferometer-based optical measurement and sensing techniques which is required to shift optical frequency. In this paper, we describe an acousto-optic frequency shifter using a fused taper directional coupler that is originally phase mismatched. The maximum coupling ratio of a fused taper coupler with dissimilar fibers is considerably lower than 100%. However, a traveling flexual acoustic wave can cause resonant forward coupling between the coupling modes and the frequency-shifted light emerges out the coupler's output made of dissimilar fibers. Design theory and fabrication of a coupler-type frequency shifter and experimental results of the measurement are followed by the principle of optical frequency shifting.
