Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Plastic optical fibers(POFs) have many advantages such as low-cost, easiness in coupling to the input/outout-side devices, and in doping functional materials into the cladding polymer. When surroundings cause change in optical property of the POF with a functional clad, the system operates as a POF-sensor for monitoring environmental condition. Some POF-sensors for detecting substances such as anmonia, humidity, oxygen and alkane vapors were successfully demonstrated. These sensing properties and technical conditions were also discussed.
