Fabrication, Measurement and Numerical Analysis of a Fused Taper-Type Optical Fiber Mode Converter

Abstract(in English) Optical fiber devices utilizing periodical coupling between different modes of dissimilar optical fibers have been studied in conjunction with its application to optical communication, sensing and optical guided-wave electronics. For example, there have been proposed a mode converter, a mode filter, a frequency shifter, an optical narrow-band filter and so on. In this paper, a new taper-type optical fiber mode converter based on fused-tapered directional coupler has been fabricated by fusing and pulling together a pre-tapered and the original single-mode fibers which is well known as a thermally fused elongation method. The mode conversion between different propagating modes in a directional coupler made of dissimilar optical fibers is then analyzed by coupled mode theory(CMT) and will be computer-simulated with a beam propagation method(BPM). Comparison of experimental results with these numerical analyses allow us to efficiently design and fabricate a new taper-type optical fiber mode converter.
