An optical cable identification system using optical interference : Application to graded index multi-mode fiber cable

Abstract(in English) For cable maintenance and replacement, it is often necessary to identify the required optical fiber cable among many others without slicing the cables open. We have developed an optical cable identification system that utilizes optical interference for solving this problem. In this paper, we applied this system to identification of graded index multi-mode fiber cables. Using back-scattered lights, this system achieved identification at a length of over 10-km. It will allow a reduction in manpower for cable maintenance, because it can accomplish quick identification using only one end of the cable.
