Abstract(in English) | A fiber directional coupler is one of the passive optical devices used in fiber applications such as wavelength division multiplexing and distributed/multiplexed coherent sensing systems. When the coupler is excited with an intense laser light, an intensity dependent index of refraction is induced due to an optical Kerr effect and it modifies the linear coupling characteristics of the coupler. In this paper, we consider a fused-tapered directional coupler and analyzed nonlinear coupling characteristics based on a coupled mode theory with use of a cascaded coupler segment method for the tapered section. The evolution of peak power at the coupled and through ports of the coupler was also demonstrated using a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser that produces 50 femtosecond pulses at wavelengths of 800-850nm with a repetition rate of 81.7MHz. As a result, the wavelength selective coupling and switching characteristics in a nonlinear directional fiber coupler(NLDC)can be confirmed experimentally. |
