Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this paper, firstly the outline of development of earthquake resistant design of buildings in Japan is presented. Next characteristics of recent disastrous earthquakes, such as the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu, the 1999 Taiwan Chi-Chi and the 1999 Turkey Kocaeli earthquakes, are explained. The lessons obtained from these disastrous earthquakes are introduced. In Japan, criteria for earthquake resistant design was changed several times according to past disastrous earthquakes such as the 1968 Tockachi Oki and the 1978 Miyagi-ken Oki earthquakes. Most of damaged buildings in the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake were designed under the old criteria. Thus evaluation of earthquake resistant capacities and repairs are very important for these buildings. Examples of the seismic risk evaluation using the geographic information system are also presented.
