Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper presents a mobile access network based on PON (Passive Optical Network). In order to realize broadband multimedia communications we aim for an all-IP network based on micro-cells. Mobile IP is the basis for mobility support for IP terminals, and here we propose a basic Mobile IP concept for supporting mobiles using the PON broadcast functionality. Foreign Agents (FA) are located in each base station, and several FA use the same IP address. This model uses IP transmission all the way to the cell. We further showed soft handover and use of buffers to save dropped out IP packets due to handovers. Also, we mentioned three handover possibilities, backward, forward, or using prepared resources in the new cell, and discussed their use in order to support high-speed handover. Taking advantage of its broadcast capability, we saw that PON is a strong candidate for an access network supporting future mobile multimedia communications.
