Route Information and Image Processing of a Robotic Travel Aid

Abstract(in English) The research and development of the robot which safely guides the visually impaired to the destination is done. The volunteer has the robot run, and the route and information on the environment are acquired in TEACHING MODE. The robot does the image processing, and guides the visually impaired based on the information in NAVIGATION MODE. In the image processing, detection and the recognition of the following objects are done; 1) white lines, braille blocks, and pavement boundaries, etc., 2) landmarks such as signboard, signals, signs and crosswalks, 3) obstacles which appear dynamically.
