Abstract(in English) | Assessment of ability of use of the sign language was attempted for the hearing-impaired persons aged from around 20 up to 29, by employing as stimuli signed sentences which consisted of 13 to 18 words and had various grammatical expressions. 1) Rate of correct reproducibility through imitation of sentences in the Japanese Sign Language decreased in average in the order of Group A (both of their parents were deaf), Group B (attended to the schools for the deaf all through the school years), and Group C and D (enrolled in the school for the deaf from junior high). However, a significant person to person difference was found in each of the groups. 2) As for the role shift expression which is characteristic of the sign language, frequency of use was less for many of the young hearing-impaired persons in this study. 3) Even among the Group A whose both parents were deaf, not few had insufficient ability of use of the sign language. The reasons for this fact was estimated as follows: They failed in having a sufficient contact to the sign language during their critical period of language acquisition because they did not live with their parents or they attended to the normal schools. |
