Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recent studies revealed that humans interact socially with computers in much the same way as they interact with humans. "Ethopoeia," a Greek word composed of "Ethos (character)" and "Poeia (representation)," captures this inherent human nature of attributing human qualities to computational as well as non-computational media. We have been working to elucidate the human psychological factors of social interpersonal responses when people socially interact with computers and other intelligent objects, such as autonomous robots, software agents and machines with complex architectures. We believe the phenomena of "ethopoeia" need to be seriously considered in framing our future life, where humans will invariably have to coexist and establish affiliative relationships with computational agents. We present some results of our studies focusing on a social aspect of human-computer interactions, to provide an opportunity to discuss the human nature of communications.
