| Abstract(in English) | The applications and the size of video data make the design of cost-effective video servers a challenging task. In this paper, we describe our work on the design and implementation of a video-on-demand server that employs hierarchical storage. In particular, we focus on three aspects of the problem the storage structure, the disk management and the admission control. On storage structure, we study a hybrid placement strategy that exploits the benefits of both the matrix and data striping techniques. We also explore the effectiveness of replicating video data under the matrix storage scheme. A dual-policy disk management scheme is also proposed to ensure the disk pool is well utilized as buffers to the tertiary storage. Finally, a novel flexible admission control policy is introduced that allows requests to be admitted even when its continuity requirement may not be met. We present results from a preliminary study that show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques. |
