Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recent development of Micro CT scanners have enabled us to acquire volumetric images of the lung with very high resolution and to conduct three-dimensional analysis of lung micro structure which has been done only by plain observation using a stereo microscope. Micro structure analysis of the lung enables us to detect diseases and to research on the relation between lung micro structure and body functions. This paper discribes a method for extracting pulmonary alveoli based on Euclidean distance transformation and analysis of lung micro structure. Our method classifies pulmonary alveoli and ductuli alveolares regions using local maxima of the Euclidean distance. These regions are extracted by using two types of region growing methods. Experimental results confirmed that the proposed method was effective for the extraction and analysis of lung micro structure.
