Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The temporal subtraction image which is obtained by subtracting a previous chest radiograph from a current one, can enhance interval changes considerably. In this article, we provide an overview of the scheme and the clinical usefulness of the temporal subtraction technique for the detection of interval changes on digital chest radiographs. Observer performance studies with ROC analyses clearly indicated that the radiologists' detection accuracy of pulmonary nodules was significantly improved when the temporal subtraction images were used. In addition, our result indicates that the lung cancer of one case, which was not detected with current and previous images alone, was correctly detected by using the temporal subtraction image in the lung cancer screening program. Therefore, we strongly believe that the temporal subtraction technique is clinically useful for radiologists to detect interval changes in digital chest radiographs.
