Abstract(in English) This paper describes about a virtual needle biopsy for the virtual prostate model based on anatomical knowledge. The prostate biopsy is the only way for determining whether cancer exists or not. To develop a reliable biopsy method, it is necessary to evaluate the number of needles, arrangement of needles, and their directions by large number of experiments. To evaluate these procedures by systematically and quantitatively, we have developed the virtual needle biopsy system. This system enables us to evaluate the prostate needle biopsy procedure by executing biopsy simulation based on 3-D prostate images reconstructed from prostate specimens. Because the number of specimens is limited, we create two types of virtual prostate models such as the regular size prostate model and hypertrophic prostate model. These models consist of Peripheral Zone(PZ) and Transition Zone(TZ). We applied these models to the virtual prostate biopsy system. The experimental results showed that the system can evaluate biopsy procedures systematically and quantitatively.
