Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Presented in this paper is an industrial researcher's view on the character recognition technologies, including a review of 30-year technological advancements, the hidden difficulties, and future prospects. To be mentioned are the researches on the directional pattern features for handwritten character recognition, touching handwritten digit recognition based on multiple hypotheses, document analysis for automated document filing, and postal address recognition. The principles that realize robust pattern recognition systems will be also discussed. In this context, information integration for intelligent character string recognition is explained in some detail.
