A Study on Motion Estimation Method for Mesh-based Video Coding

Abstract(in English) We propose improved procedures for mesh-based motion estimation. In the proposed method, firstly, the motion vector of each vertex in the triangle mesh is adaptively selected from the motion vectors obtained by the two motion estimation methods; the one is full search motion estimation and the other is iterative search motion estimation. The aim is to adapt to various video sequence, therefore, these two methods are suitable for the sequences having fast moving portion and uniform motion, respectively. Secondly, a motion vector evaluation method is proposed in order to cope with the drawback that the motion compensation using affine transformation can't compensate for wrong motion vector. In the method, inappropriate motion vector are detected by utilizing topological information of the triangle and bi-directional motion estimation. Then the identified inappropriate motion vector is replaced with interpolated motion vector from the motion vectors of neighbor vertexes, so as to reduce motion compensation defects. The simulation results show that the proposed method can select motion estimation method to adapt to video sequences, and reduce motion compensation defects.
