An Acceleration Method for Selecting and Tracking of Feature Points by the Active Search and Its Application to Endoscopic Images

Abstract(in English) This paper describes methods for accelerating feature points tracking on bronchoscopic images and selecting feature points for this tracking. Recently, endoscopic surgery has increasingly been widespread because of its low invasiveness on patients. To assist the doctor during the operation of an endoscope, we have developed the Endoscope Navigation System. It is an important task for the system to keep track of the position of the endoscope that we are examining means of keeping it by using corresponding points between images. Lack of distinct feature points in bronchoscopic images requires use of correlation coefficient, which often leads to immense amount of calculation. The acceleration method utilizes the active search and reduces the number of calculation of correlationcoefficient by limiting corresponding point candidates. Furthermore, a method for selecting feature points that helps the acceleration method perform more efficiently is also proposed. The experimental results showed that theselected feature points improve the tracking performance, and the acceleration method reduces execution time bymore than 90%.
