| Abstract(in English) | In this paper, we propose a method for extracting the middle point between the eyes, or Between-the-Eyes, in real time, which can be a good clue in detecting other face feature points. First, a rectangle of a certain size is scanned on the image. The rectangular region is divided into six segments and their bright-dark relations are tested to see if the rectangle's center can be candidat for Between-the-Eyes. Usually when such candidates form clusters, a one from the midst. of each cluster is left. With in each candidate, a pair of most eye-like points is detected, one point in each of the right and left halves of the rectangular region, and the candidate is re-registered as the oint between them. Then they are evaluated with some criteria to determine whether the candidate is true of false. For now, we expect one face per image. An advantage of this approach is that it only requires information between the eye-brows and the nose. Therefore, it is not affected by a beard or a mustache, hairs on the forehead, or nostril visibility. We tested the algorithm with the faces in a database, and the detection rate was 88%. We implemented the system on a PC with a Pentium III 866MHz CPU, running at 15 frames/second without any special hardware. |
