Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper describes implementation and evaluation of an on-line/off-line combined recognition system using normalization of likelihood values. The goal of the combination is to exploit the both merits of on-line recognition and off-line recognition. The on-line/off-line combined system has achieved the recognition rate of 92.8% and the 5th cumulative rate of 99.0% to the on-line handwritten character pattern database "kuchibue" while on-line and off-line recognizers perform 87.5% and 86.8% recognitions, respectively. The combined system is robust against wrong stroke pattern or added stroke patterns that are weak points of on-line recognizers as well as heavily distorted patterns difficult for off-line methods to recognize. Moreover, the system inherits the structural learning capability from the on-line recognizer.
